24 Oct - Ramacandra Vijayotsava

On the tenth day of the waxing moon of Padmanabha (Asvina) month, occurs Vijayotsava. On this day Lord Ramacandra heard from Hanuman beneath the sami tree that he had found and seen Sita on the Island kingdom of Lanka. Hearing this, Ramacandra held a festival, and then set out for Sri Lanka. On this day one may perform special puja of Lord Ramacandra and then in His honour feed the Vaisnavas. This is a popular festival in north India, where, on this occasion, large paper effigies of the demon Ravana are burned to the resounding chants of Victory to Rama, Victory to Rama.

In the pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu he absorbed Himself in the transcendental lila of Lord Ramacandra in the following manner as recorded by Srila Krishna dasa Kaviraj Goswami.

Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Madhya-lila Chap 15 Texts 31-35.

Madhya 15.31

 parama-avese prabhu aila nija-ghara
 ei-mata lila kare gauranga-sundara

TRANSLATION
In great ecstasy, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu returned to His residence. In this way, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, known as Gauranga-sundara, performed various pastimes.

Madhya 15.32

 vijaya-dasami——lanka-vijayera dine
 vanara-sainya kaila prabhu lana bhakta-gane

TRANSLATION
On the victory day celebrating the conquest of Lanka–a day known as Vijaya-dasami–Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu dressed up all His devotees like monkey soldiers.

Madhya 15.33

 hanuman-avese prabhu vriksha-sakha lana
 lanka-gade cadi’ phele gada bhangiya

TRANSLATION
Displaying the emotions of Hanuman, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took up a large tree branch, and, mounting the walls of the Lanka fort, began to dismantle it.

21 Oct - Durga Puja - Dussehra

Dussehra (Dassera) is one of the significant Hindu festivals, celebrated with much joy in the entire country. The occasion marks the occassion of Lord Rama and brother Lakshman approaching Mother Durga to ask her for her blessings in His planned attack on the demon Ravana. It is therefore considered that the Supreme Personality of Godhead's approaching her for blessings to remove material impediments to His spiritual goals should be the approach of the humble devotee of the Lord to clinche the important triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king, Ravana, the victory of good over evil.

Brilliantly decorated tableaux and processions depicting various facets of Rama's life are taken out. On the tenth day, the Vijayadasmi day, colossal effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkarna and son Meghnath are placed in vast open spaces. Rama, accompanied by his consort Sita and his brother Lakshman, arrive and shoot arrows of fire at these effigies, which are stuffed with explosive material. The result is a deafening blast, enhanced by the shouts of merriment and triumph from the spectators.

It is significant that the Lord invoked the blessings of the divine mother, Goddess Durga, before actually going out to battle. In burning the effigies of the demon Ravan who was slain by Lord Rama it is also symbolic for us that we, the people are asked to burn the evil within them, and thus follow the path of virtue and goodness, bearing in mind the instance of Ravana, who despite all his might and majesty was destroyed for his evil ways.

It must be remembered that Ravana was a great scholar and an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, but the very powers that were bestowed on him for his steadfast devotion proved to be his undoing, due to his gross misuse of the same. Furthermore although empowered by his austerities performed to Lord Shiva, his powers were ineffective over the powers of Rama.

A Glimpse in the life of Sripad Aindra Prabhu

Aindra Prabhu was born in Virginia, U.S.A in 1953 in an artistic family. His father played bluegrass music, his mother the harp, his brother the bass, and he himself took to the guitar—as well as other instruments and crafts. He happened to meet the devotees in Washington D. C. in the summer of 1973 while they were out on street  sankirtana. Aindra Prabhu eagerly joined in, followed them back to the temple, and moved in more or less right away. A few months later, on Nityananda Trayodasi, he was initiated into the Gaudiya-sampradaya  and given the name Aindra Dasa by Srila Prabhupada.

The 24-hour kirtana revival began on the Rama-vijaya-dasami of 1986. That day commemorates the vijaya (victory) of Lord Ramacandra over the demon Ravana. But the param vijayate, the supreme victory, Lord Caitanya declared, is sri krsna sankirtanam, the loud chanting of the Holy Names of Krishna, because that chanting conquers not only bad qualities but ultimately birth and death as well. Not only that, but it is the life of all transcendental knowledge. It increases the ocean of transcendental bliss and enables us to fully taste the nectar we always hanker for.

And so, on the auspicious day of Rama-vijaya-dasami, the 24-hour kirtana started under the auspices of Aindra Prabhu, and it remained so for the next twenty-four years. As Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa at the age of twenty-four and performed sankirtana, both publicly and privately, for the next twenty-four years, Aindra Prabhu also journeyed to Vrindavan twenty-four years ago with the intention of dedicating his body, mind, and soul to the sankirtana movement—which he did, also for a period of twenty-four years.

Aindra Prabhu had the potency to stay in one place and affect the world, but those who travel can also affect the world. The real point is the intensity of purpose: letting go of petty, mundane attachments, and focusing on our goal. This is Aindra Prabhu’s example and our challenge. And we can take heart from the example of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, who preached vigorously in Bengal and fought against many deviant sects but later became discouraged because the deviant groups he had fought to expose, and whom he had subdued for some time, were coming back again. In his despondent state, he had a dream in which Caitanya Mahaprabhu told him to go to Jagannatha Puri and establish a bhajana-kutira near Haridasa Thakura's samadhi and just chant the holy names there. His chanting, Mahaprabhu told him, would purify the whole world.

New tune of Aindra Baba (unheard n unpublished)

I came across this new tune which is a studio recording of Aindra P's latest album which was left incomplete due to his sudden departure from this material world n returning back to golokdham. Hope you all like it.

Compassion of Lord Siva

Listen / Download the audio lect - Compassion of Lord Siva - HH RNS

Vaisnavanam yatha sambhuh. Lord Siva showed so many examples on so many levels. Daksa was blaspheming him, actually historically it is like this. He was pointing out things about Lord Siva but putting them in the wrong context. "You associate with ghosts and demons and frequent crematoriums and you have skulls all over your body." The great Vaisnavas understand that these are the great ornaments of Lord Siva. He was explaining it in such a way to blaspheme. He was saying the most horrible things. He cursed Lord Siva, "Because you are such an abominable rascal who shows no respect to his superior like me I curse you, you will not be given any share with the rest of the demigods of sacrifices."

Lord Siva is a great Vaisnava he was not disturbed. He was being blasphemed like anything he was just sitting there calmly. He was taking it in a positive way. "Now I don’t have to associate with all these materialistic demigods to get shares of the yajnas." He was taking a curse as a blessing.
Tolerance! trinad api sunicena, [3rd stanza of Mahaprabhu’s Sri Siksastakam] Siva is the embodiment of gentleness.

In Vrindavan he is Gopisvara Mahadeva. He is the guardian of the rasa-lila in the form of a gopi. He wanted to be in the rasa-lila so he was told by one of Radharani’s associates, "You go to Mana-sarovara and bathe." In speartion from Krishna, Radharani filled these kunds with the tears of Her love in separation and Lord Siva bathed in the tears of Srimati Radharani in Mana-sarovara and came out in the form of the gopi and was given the role of guarding the rasa-lila. What an intimate Vaisnava! Gopi Siva!

At Govardhana he showed a beautiful example of how he loved the association of devotees as Cakalesvara Mahadev. Sanatana Goswami was living right next to him at Manasi-ganga. At that time so many mosquitoes were eating up Sanatana Goswami day and night. It was disturbing his service because he was trying to write books, do his bhajan and there were swarms of mosquitoes. So he was thinking, "I can better do my service somewhere else. I will leave this place.

When Lord Siva understood he was thinking like this and he was his next-door neighbor as Cakalesvara Mahadev deity he couldn't bare the thought of separation from Sanatana Goswami. So he appeared in a beautiful brahmana form and told Sanatana Goswami to stay one more night and see. Sanatana Goswami said, "I will stay one more night." And then Lord Siva went to the demigod in charge of mosquitoes (Laughter) and said tell your mosquitoes not to bother Sanatana at all. So not a single mosquito came that way after that.
So in so many ways - vaisnavanam yatha sambhuh!

Lord Siva is a mahajana teaching us how to follow by his example. Prabhupada warns that as far as his smoking ganja and that stuff you cannot imitate.
You can follow but you cannot imitate. If you can drink poison ocean then you can do this. The spirit of his love and attachment to the devotees, the spirit of his humility and tolerance and most of all his spirit of compassion, this is what we must be cultivating if we actually want to make spiritual advancement, if we actually want to please Krishna.

Srila Prabhupada who walked among us he showed these principles in such a divine extraordinary way and it is that example of Srila Prabhupada that is the divine power that can help us to remain together on the basis of the higher principle of bhakti despite all inevitable reasons to fight and disagree. It is that divine power of Srila Prabhupada’s example that can empower any of us to do extraordinary things in this world.
