Vaisnavanam yatha sambhuh. Lord Siva showed so many examples on so many levels. Daksa was blaspheming him, actually historically it is like this. He was pointing out things about Lord Siva but putting them in the wrong context. "You associate with ghosts and demons and frequent crematoriums and you have skulls all over your body." The great Vaisnavas understand that these are the great ornaments of Lord Siva. He was explaining it in such a way to blaspheme. He was saying the most horrible things. He cursed Lord Siva, "Because you are such an abominable rascal who shows no respect to his superior like me I curse you, you will not be given any share with the rest of the demigods of sacrifices."

Lord Siva is a great Vaisnava he was not disturbed. He was being blasphemed like anything he was just sitting there calmly. He was taking it in a positive way. "Now I don’t have to associate with all these materialistic demigods to get shares of the yajnas." He was taking a curse as a blessing.
Tolerance! trinad api sunicena, [3rd stanza of Mahaprabhu’s Sri Siksastakam] Siva is the embodiment of gentleness.

In Vrindavan he is Gopisvara Mahadeva. He is the guardian of the rasa-lila in the form of a gopi. He wanted to be in the rasa-lila so he was told by one of Radharani’s associates, "You go to Mana-sarovara and bathe." In speartion from Krishna, Radharani filled these kunds with the tears of Her love in separation and Lord Siva bathed in the tears of Srimati Radharani in Mana-sarovara and came out in the form of the gopi and was given the role of guarding the rasa-lila. What an intimate Vaisnava! Gopi Siva!

At Govardhana he showed a beautiful example of how he loved the association of devotees as Cakalesvara Mahadev. Sanatana Goswami was living right next to him at Manasi-ganga. At that time so many mosquitoes were eating up Sanatana Goswami day and night. It was disturbing his service because he was trying to write books, do his bhajan and there were swarms of mosquitoes. So he was thinking, "I can better do my service somewhere else. I will leave this place.

When Lord Siva understood he was thinking like this and he was his next-door neighbor as Cakalesvara Mahadev deity he couldn't bare the thought of separation from Sanatana Goswami. So he appeared in a beautiful brahmana form and told Sanatana Goswami to stay one more night and see. Sanatana Goswami said, "I will stay one more night." And then Lord Siva went to the demigod in charge of mosquitoes (Laughter) and said tell your mosquitoes not to bother Sanatana at all. So not a single mosquito came that way after that.
So in so many ways - vaisnavanam yatha sambhuh!

Lord Siva is a mahajana teaching us how to follow by his example. Prabhupada warns that as far as his smoking ganja and that stuff you cannot imitate.
You can follow but you cannot imitate. If you can drink poison ocean then you can do this. The spirit of his love and attachment to the devotees, the spirit of his humility and tolerance and most of all his spirit of compassion, this is what we must be cultivating if we actually want to make spiritual advancement, if we actually want to please Krishna.

Srila Prabhupada who walked among us he showed these principles in such a divine extraordinary way and it is that example of Srila Prabhupada that is the divine power that can help us to remain together on the basis of the higher principle of bhakti despite all inevitable reasons to fight and disagree. It is that divine power of Srila Prabhupada’s example that can empower any of us to do extraordinary things in this world.

Govardhan Eco Village

http://ecovillage.org.in/

Govardhan Eco Village boasts of a vibrant community of over 160 members which includes about 25 families, 60 resident monks and 50 students. Community living forms the most vital aspect of GEV, teaching the importance of sharing as a means of conserving natural resources. At GEV the community is centered around leading a natural lifestyle based on the cardinal principles<link to FAQ> of Vedas. Real eco-friendly lifestyle begins when we harmonize our lives with the divine cosmic laws and learn to abstain from activities that are detrimental for development of a peaceful environment within. And it is only by our individual commitment to nurture a divine ecology of the heart, can we hope to come together as a community to protect the environment outside.

A beautiful temple is located within the GEV campus which forms the centre of the community and it is the mood of service that forms the impetus for the entire communities’ activities. All of the residents (except the students) are engaged in various activities at the farm like Organic farming, cottage industries, Cow care, teaching and rural developmental activities. As the rural outreach programs in over a dozen nearby villages continue to expand, the number of people visiting the temple is steadily increasing. Work is already in progress to make a new temple complex, with a capacity for accommodating over 1000 people, built completely by sustainable materials and eco-friendly technologies.

Pastimes of Lord Nrsimhadeva

 Child Hit by Truck

for more such stories please visit - http://www.narasimhalila.com

Now allow me to tell a true story that happened some 10 years ago in South Africa. The father and the daughter who experienced this event told this story to my friend, a sannyasi and devotee of Lord Nrsimhadev. This stories was also found in the newspapers, and several witnesses of this truck-accident after this incident became devotees of Lord Nrsimhadev. This happened to a simple Vaishnava family that lives there. They had back then a 5 years old daughter. This girl was a great "fan of Nrsimhadev." She found Him simply funny, as He looked half-lion half-man and she felt very attracted to Him. She often told her playmates about her favorite God, a lion, and the kids always wondered about what kind of God this could be--a lion.

What can a five year old girl know about God? She wasn't initiated, not even her parents, as far as I can remember. The father of the family followed a guru and surely later accepted initiation. But there was a small Hindu-community they were in close touch with.

So, one day the girl was playing outside with her ball together with other kids, beside the street. The ball, how else could it be, fell on the street, and the girl ran after her precious ball. There was nearly no traffic, a rarely used country road. But this time a very fast truck came running down the road. The girl in her play didn't see the truck coming.

The father was in the first floor of the house and saw his baby girl running on the street. But he also saw the huge truck coming down, closer to his daughter with huge speed. The father yelled at her, but she didn't hear him. So he jumped out of the window of this first floor to save his daughter, and broke both his legs, when coming down, and remained laying on the ground in pain.

He had to watch how his little girl was hit by the truck and thrown through the air, some 20meter away. All children and neighbors around who observed this froze the blood. The father later said his only desire when he saw this was to die.

From the other direction came a police car that also witnessed the accident. The truck went on and the policeman stopped his car across the street to stop him. The truck-driver hardly stopped his truck and he seemed to be very drunk. The policeman immediately called the ambulance and ran over to the motionless laying girl in the grass. The closest hospital was a small private clinic. The ambulance came, but refused to take the girl, being afraid they wouldn't have the necessary devices and machines to help the injuries the girl must have. They advised the policeman to call the main hospital, as only they could efficiently help her, as her spine must be broken, etc. The policeman was in despair, not even knowing where the father of the girl was. Actually he didn't even know if the girl was still alive, as he didn't dare to touch her, not knowing how injured she was. However, in the end she was brought to a right hospital, the policeman accompanied the girl, and also finally the father was there.

The chief-doctor heard then what happened to the girl, and they immediately x-rayed her to see first results. The policeman wanted to rest assured how the girl was doing, and waited there to see the results. Everybody was shocked to hear what terrific accident had happened to the girl.

So the nurse brought the x-ray pictures to the doctor, who became very upset and started yelling at the nurse she should for-God's-sake bring the right pictures, things were about death and life! He threatened to fire her, as it was unacceptable to make such mistakes. The nurse was scared and didn't understand what was happening. Those were the pictures of the five year old girl that was hit by the truck. The nurse wasn't aware yet of what had happened to the girl. The doc said this cannot be, for on the x-ray there was not a single broken bone. So, the doc all the time again and again repeated "Impossible! It can't be."

Then suddenly the girl awoke from her faint and then told a story at full consciousness, which made its tour through the media.

In the moment she picked up the ball from the street, she saw the truck coming up to her. The only thing she could do was to yell out for help. She didn't call for mommy or daddy, but for her Nrsimhadev. In this moment when the truck should hit her, she suddenly saw how Nrisimhadev picked her up from the ground, smiled at her, and said, "Don't be afraid, nothing will happen to you." The girl continued her story that the Lord had put her on the other side of the street into the grass. But when putting her down, He accidentally scratched her waist, which still hurt her a bit.

She spoke about how beautiful Nrsimhadev was, His hair, His eyes, etc. But his claws were very sharp, He should cut the nails. He wore a golden dhotie, etc. The doctor didn't understand anything and told the policeman she still was in shock and hallucinated, which is normal.

So, the girl was profoundly checked for any injuries, but the only injury they found on her body were those scratches and the doctor said this must be from a wild animal like a lion, as he had cases like this before. So, he was disturbed and asked if they had brought the girl to hospital, as this one was inured by a wild animal, not a truck. Nobody was clear about what had happened. The same doctor and the nurse who took care of her later became devotees, as they later learned from the parent who "that lion" was.

As we can see miracles still today happen. Not only in Mahabharata, Puranas or shastras that are more than thousands of years old. The little girl was very attracted to this form of God, and in her despair she called Him for help. Lord Nrsimhadev did not look if she was initiated and have the right to call His name. He protects His devotees that sincerely worship Him in their hearts.

I am sure this litte girl was no common soul. Who knows what she did in her previous life? The sannyasi heard that she very much liked to eat sweets, and prepared a big plate full of sweets for her to rest assured she will not be able to eat it all up. He gave her the mounted plate of sweets, she took some of the sweets and ran out playing with her friends.

As soon as she was gone from the room, the sannyasi went over to that plate and took the rest, as for him, this was the best maha-prasad available! Who last time has met Lord Nrsimhadev? Narada Muni maybe?? The girl for sure, and she must be a great soul.

Jai Nrsimhadev!

Jayananda Dasa – A Modern Saint

Jayananda Dasa – A Modern Saint

0N JANUARY 16,1967, Srila Prabhupada flew from New York to inaugurate the first Hare Krsna temple in San Francisco. His arrival was covered by the Channel Four news and by both daily newspapers. While most of San Francisco may have ignored the story, a young man named Jim Kohr noticed it.

Despite having a degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University, he had been driving a taxi on the streets of San Francisco. Never quite able to fit into the corporate rat-race or the upperclass crowd, he was often unhappy and didn’t really know why. Though Jim was not a religious person, the article ignited a ray of hope in him. He resolved to check out the Indian Swami.

Unknowingly, Jim was taking his first step toward fulfilling his destiny. Though he would live for only another ten years, in that short time he would witness the culmination of lifetimes of spiritual effort. He would depart the world leaving behind many valuable lessons to inspire and instruct present and future generations of Vaisnavas, devotees of the Lord.

The following evening, Jim arrived at the temple to find it filled mostly with hippies. With his short hair, cleancut looks, and well-pressed clothes, he stood out. And at 28, he was older than most of the others there. But Jim’s misgivings disappeared when he saw the Swami enter. Jim sat through the lecture and bought a three-volume set of Srimad-Bhagavatam, which Srila Prabhupada autographed with the inscription “To Sriman Jim Kolr.” For the first time in many years Jim felt peaceful. He had just received the audience of his eternal spiritual master.

Jim started coming to the temple regularly. He especially liked the morning program, when most of the hippies were still sleeping. Sometimes he would be the only person in the class. Years later he revealed that he trusted the Swami and felt confident the Swami wouldn’t cheat him. As a four-year old, Jim had once stood up in church and looked around anxiously. When his grandmother had asked him what was the matter, he had asked, “Where is God” Now he felt that Srila Prabhupada was answering this ancient question buried deep in his consciousness. In February 1967, Prabhupada accepted Jim as his disciple and initiated him with the name Jayananda Dasa.

In Vaisnava scriptures, such as Srila Rupa Gosvami’s Bhakti-Rasamrata-sindhu, translated into English by Srila Prabhupada as The Nectar of Devotion, we learn that a conditioned soul progresses through stages of sadhana-bhakti (devotional practice) before attaining spontaneous love for God. The new bhaktas (devotees) at the San Francisco temple would often struggle with their material desires and their daily spiritual practices, falling in and out of Krsna consciousness. Surprisingly, no one remembers Jayananda in the role of a “new bhakta”. He took to Krsna consciousness naturally and effortlessly. He relished all aspects of Krsna consciousness-chanting on his beads, singing in kirtana, eating prasadam, performing Deity worship, and so on. He would often remark, ‘Krsna consciousness is so sweet”.

In fact, Jayananda found Krsna consciousness so sweet that he soon lost the taste for anything else. He gave his life savings to Srila Prabhupada, and in the Preface to The Nectar of Devotion, Prabhupada publicly thanked him: “I beg to acknowledge, with thanks, the contribution made by my beloved disciple Sriman Jayananda Brahmacari.”

PAYING THE BILLS

Jayananda became absorbed in practical devotional service. He was constantly serving the Lord, whether buying supplies, cooking prasadam, cleaning the kitchen, taking out the trash, or teaching new devotees. He did all this after a full day of taxi cab driving, by which he’d pay the temple’s bills. He became an expert in anything needed to spread Krsna consciousness. He went out to sell Prabhupada’s Teachings of Lord Caitanya, becoming a pioneer in a service dear to Prabhupada’s heart – the public distribution of books on Krsna consciousness.

On the appearance day of Lord Caitanya, Srila Prabhupada was very pleased to see Jayananda spontaneously performing kirtana on the street outside the temple. Encouraged, Jayananda then started singing regularly on busier streets with other devotees, laying the foundation for chanting (sankirtana) parties that would soon travel all over the country.

Both devotees and others were instinctively attracted by Jayananda’s purity. Once, when he offered a garland to Srila Prabhupada, he apologized for his greasy clothes. Srila Prabhupada remarked, “There is absolutely no offence. You may be dirty, but your heart is pure.”

Jayananda touched the hearts of many people, and they usually responded by doing some service for Kr5na. He would get almost everything for the temple free or at a steep discount. He was friends with shopkeepers, city officials, drunks, and derelicts. Everybody loved Jayananda, and he happily engaged everyone in the service of the Lord. He worked the hardest, but he praised the service of everyone else. He was humble, tolerant, compassionate, and renounced. His actions, his words, his life, and his death all exemplified the process of bhakti, devotional service to the Lord.

Srila Prabhupada’s instructions — especially those encouraging practical service — became Jayananda’s very life. Once, when a devotee asked him how to make advancement in Krsna consciousness, Jayananda shrugged and said, “I really don’t know. I’m too busy working.”

So immersed was Jayananda in executing Prabhupada’s instructions that he would rarely get time to meet Srila Prabhupada. Serving in separation, he understood that association through instructions is more important than physical association. It is said that one must act in such a way that Krsna will want to see you; Jayananda exemplified this dictum by his service attitude.

Invariably Srila Prabhupada would ask for Jayananda, and someone would have to go fetch him. For Jayananda, Sri Krsna and Srila Prabhupada were the only two ultimate truths. Everything else, including his body, was to be engaged in their service.

LAUNCHING RATHAYATRA

One day some devotees got a small deity of Lord Jagannatha (Krsna as “the Lord of the universe”) from an import store. Srila Prabhupada sent them back to get the other deities of the set — Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra — and he started Their worship in the temple. Meditating on the Deities, Srila Prabhupada expressed his intense desire to spread Their mercy by organizing a Rathayatra, the chariot festival held in Their honour each year in the holy city of Jagannatha Puri in India. Jayananda dedicated himself to fulfilling this desire of Prabhupada’s. Starting with a flatbed truck, he put together a “chariot” with whatever help he could get from devotees and anyone else. On July 9, 1967, the first Rathayatra in San Francisco — the first ever outside India — took place because of Jayananda’s blood, sweat, and toil.

Jayananda improved the festival year after year, raising money, getting permits, doing the publicity, building huge Rathayatra chariots from scratch, and even baking pies for groups he’d interact with, such as the city police and the U.S. Park Service. He would live with the Rathayatra chariots while they were being built, often working with little or no sleep as the festival date approached. Eventually held in Golden Gate Park, the festival drew bigger and bigger crowds year after year. Thanks to Jayananda’s efforts, thousands of people received Lord Jagannatha’s mercy. The festivals are now held in cities around the world.

Srila Prabhupada often expressed his deep gratitude to Jayananda for the Jagannatha Rathayatra festivals. When Jayananda passed away, Srila Prabhupada said that his picture should be carried on one of the chariots at every Jagannatha Rathayatra.

DISEASED BODY

While preparing for the New York Rathayatra in 1976, Jayananda found painful lumps growing on his body. A God brother worried that they might be cancerous, but Jayananda made him promise not to tell Srila Prabhupada until after the festival. Jayananda’s main concern was that the Rathayatra should be a success; everything else was secondary.

The New York Rathayatra was indeed a great success. Rolling down Fifth Avenue, the three chariots delighted thousands of people, many becoming inspired to inquire into and even take up the practices of Krsna consciousness. Srila Prabhupada was ecstatic. He called it a grand success and thanked Jayananda for his service.

The lumps on Jayananda’s body turned out to be cancerous. He was diagnosed with leukaemia, which gradually reduced his body to a shell. Accepting that he would die soon, Jayananda continued to express his deep gratitude towards Srila Prabhupada. His friends were, shocked and saddened to see his disease-ravaged body, but Jayananda was still too busy, performing devotional service to give it much concern. And, when he did agree to medical treatment. he used his time in the hospital to tell doctors, nurses, and patients about Krsna consciousness.

Jayananda constantly thought about how to expand the Rathayatra festival to other cities. In his final months, he helped organize the Los Angeles Rathayatra festival, making phone calls, raising money, and guiding devotees. One day, while walking on Venice Beach, where the festival would be held, he looked down and — as if visualizing the upcoming festival — said, “What a wonderful Rathayatra!”

On May 1, 1977, just a few months before the Rathayatra festival, Jayananda passed from this world. In a letter written to Jayananda after his passing, Srila Prabhupada congratulated him on a glorious life and an even more glorious death, since both in life and at death he had been absorbed in the service of Krsna. Prabhupada ordained that the disappearance day of Jayananda be celebrated like those of other Vaisnava saints. As Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura so eloquently said:

He reasons ill who says that
Vaisnavas die
When thou art living still in sound!
The Vaisnavas die to live, and
living try
To spread the holy name around.

As I think about Jayananda, I imagine this scene: Somewhere a Rathayatra festival is about to start. Conch shell blasts and cries of “Jaya Jagannatha!” pierce the sky. Looking on from the spiritual world, Jayananda turns to Srila Prabhupada, who nods and says, “Thank you very much”.

Eight Appeals to Sri Radha

Sri Gandharva-Prarthanasataka
“Eight Appeals to Sri Radha

From Srila Rupa Gosvami’s Sri Stava-mala

  1. Please reveal the lotus faces of You both as, with the enthusiasm of two maddened elephants, You enjoy pastimes in the pleasure-groves of Vrindavan. O queen! Please be kind to me. Please be kind.
  2. Falling down like a stick on the ground, distressed, and stammering with words choked with emotion, I beg You: O Queen Gandharvika, please be kind to this foolish person and count him one of Your associates.
  3. O beautiful one, when shall I worship You, Your intense beauty leaving the goddess of fortune far behind, and Your transcendental form bound by the left arm of Lord Syama, who charms all the worlds with His handsomeness far greater than that of Lord Narayana?
  4. O queen, when, covering You with a cape as splendid as a monsoon cloud, and removing Your ankle-bells from Your feet, will I lead happy You to a splendid forest grove at night for a meeting with the prince of Vraja?
  5. When, as you, the two ornaments of the three worlds, recline on a pastime bed of flowers and enjoy pastimes of sweet joking words, will this person, massage Your lotus feet?
  6. O queen of Vrindavana, when, the two of You staying under a tree by the shore of Your lake and Your handsome lotus faces kissed with the perspiration from the fatigue of Your pastimes, will I fan You both with a camara whisk?
  7. When, as You playfully hide in a forest cave and Citra hints that, ‘Now, O beautiful-eyed one, You are trapped by Mukunda,’ and I say, ‘Don’t knit Your eyebrows,’ will I lead You, as You feign anger, into the presence on the prince of Vraja?
  8. When will I see You as, after defeating the prince of Vraja in a playful verbal duel, intoxicated with the happiness and speaking many proud words, You are elaborately praised by Your blossoming friends?
  9. Whatever surrendered devotee reads these eight appeals to the daughter of King Vrsabhanu, She, along with Her beloved, happily splashes with the waves of mercy.

ABOUT CHANTING

Definition of Sri Krishna Sankirtan

The three words sri-krishna-sankirtanam should be understood as follows. Shri refers to Lakshmi, the Goddess of Fortune. In this context, however, it indicates the supreme Goddess of Fortune, the one who is the source of all other such goddesses, namely Srimati Radharani, or Gandharvika. As such, when we say sri-krishna, we are talking about the Divine Couple, Gandharvika united with Her beloved Giridhari, the son of King Nanda. The word sankirtana is defined by Jiva Goswami as bahubhir militva kirtanam tad eva sankirtanam – “Sankirtan means the glorification of the Lord by many people together” (Bhakti-sandarbha 269). Another definition understands sam to mean samyak or “complete.” Thus sankirtan would mean the complete glorification of Shri Krishna, His name, form, attributes, associates, and pastimes. - Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur Prabhupada

Is chanting Krishna’s Names the Only Spiritual Practice?
Most certainly. The living entity has no other duty than worshiping the Lord. No one seems able to understand this. It does not matter whether you are young or old, illiterate or scholarly, man or woman, rich or poor, foolish or brilliant, saint or sinner; there is no other means for attaining perfection, no spiritual practice other than chanting Krishna’s holy name. - Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur Prabhupada
______________________________

We are certainly in difficult position, but the only remedy is that we must chant the holy name of the Lord repeatedly. And that will solve all the problems. SB 1.8.18 (lecture by HDG ACBSP)

Anyone who is engaged in chanting My transcendental name must be considered to be always associating with Me. And I may tell you frankly that for such a devotee, I become easily purchased. (NOD)

Simply by chanting the holy name of Lord Krsna, one can be freed from all undesirable habits. This is the means of awakening all good fortune and initiating the flow of waves of love for Krsna. (CC Antya-lila 20.11)

If the surface of the globe is over-flooded with the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra, the people of the world will be very, very happy.(SB 4.24.11)

HH Radhanath Swami on Sankirtan

Sankirtan is not restricted to the loud chanting and glorification of the Holy Names. It includes any other activity that we might do to assist great souls in glorifying the holy name. Thus, whether we clean toilets, or give a discourse to ten thousand people, if we do it as a sacrifice for the pleasure of Krishna, then that’s also sankirtan – the chanting of the Holy Names.

HG Sripad Aindra Prabhu

It’s time to wake up and understand what is the responsibility of every man, woman and child in this movement, to take seriously that dharma when Lord Caitanya himself inaugurated for the deliverance for all fallen conditioned souls for the rest of the Kali Yuga. There is another 427,000 years left in Kali Yuga. And the Yuga dharma doesn’t change. The next yuga is Satya Yuga where contemplated peaceful meditation is where it stands.H.G Aindra Baba!
